Job Summary
Job Description
I'm seeking a creative technologist experience in TouchDesigner and Projection mapping to co-create Muon : Bloom.
Muon : Bloom is a partially generative projection-mapping and music installation, premiering at Blink Cincinnati this October (8-11 Oct); the largest public art event in the US, drawing 2 million visitors.
The piece is driven by live data from three cosmic-ray detectors. When a muon (a subatomic particle from deep space) passes through a detector, a flash in the scintillator is converted to voltage, then MIDI, triggering and shaping visuals and score in real time. Higher-energy particles create bigger responses.
Shows run ~20 mins with voiceover and projected text, bookended by calmer generative states, projected onto a 19.25m 10.83m facade.
Each detector sits on a covered truss tower (2 x 3m, 1 x 6m).
I'm a London-based composer and installation artist working at the intersection of particle physics and new media art, with several award-winning live-data installations (Particle Shrine, Visitor). The core system exists; this role develops a new visual language on top of it, not from scratch.
Fee: £1,900 plus return flights, transfers, six nights' central Cincinnati hotel (own room) and ESTA if needed. (Full fee breakdown before interview). Named credit.
Payment: 25% on signing, 50% on a working system by 14 Sept, 25% by 31 Oct.
- Working hours: live days (8 - 11th Oct) 6pm - 11.30pm
- Working hours: install (7th Oct) 3pm - 11pm
- Anticipated development hours spread through late August and September (remote and/or person): 60 hours
I'm honest that the fee sits below what work this skilled deserves - but the piece will be professionally documented at an highly respected event in the this field, and I'm looking for a long-term visual collaborator for future iterations, not a one-off.
Full brief, technical spec, visual references and development videos available.
Applications reviewed on a rolling basis, early application encouraged.
Job Requirements
- Fluent in TouchDesigner and projection mapping
- Able to build a solid system interfacing with Ableton Live
- Confident creating a cohesive, engaging aesthetic tied closely to live data and score
- Strong collaborator: working closely with me on the visual journey, letting your ideas shape the piece rather than only implementing
- Reliable communicator: check-ins at least twice weekly to deadline
- On-site in Cincinnati 7-11 Oct (arrive 6th Oct, travel back on 12th) Oct for commissioning and the live run
- Interest in particle physics/cosmology a bonus!
Stack: TouchDesigner primarily; Processing, Ableton, Max/MSP. Notch for fixed sequences if preferred.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop and hone the projected visual language on the existing system
- Build a fixed intro (~3 min) and outro (~2 min) introducing the science; intro can build on manipulated cloud-chamber footage reacting to text and score
- Animate text choreographed to voiceover
- Create distinct generative palettes - fluid dynamics and particle systems with a cosmic feel - complementing data and score
- Map contrasting responses to each detector: rougher wireframe/percussive "hits" on left/right, richer "blooming" reactions on the central hero tower
- Build a live muon counter
- Deliver a stable, well-tested system ahead of deadline; on-site the role is mainly supervision
- Commission on the facade (warp, blend, alignment, colour) and run the show alongside me
