About the St George's Hospitals Staff Choir
The St George's Hospitals Staff Choir brings together colleagues from across THE St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust staff community to promote wellbeing, creativity, connection, and staff engagement through singing. The Choir provides an inclusive and welcoming environment for staff of all musical abilities and performs at selected hospital, charity, and community events throughout the year.
The Choir have been involved in several exciting projects in recent years. In 2023, they wrote and performed their song 'Who Cares For The Carers' as part of the 'Our National Health Stories', (a national project celebrating 75 years of the NHS) finale at Aviva Studios in Manchester. In December 2024, they performed on national television, featuring on Good Morning Britain's Christmas Day show. Learn more about the Choir.
Role Purpose
The Choir Leader will be responsible for leading engaging, relaxed and enjoyable choir rehearsals, developing the choir's musical confidence and repertoire, and preparing members for occasional performances. The successful candidate will create a positive, supportive, and inclusive atmosphere that encourages participation from staff.
We are proud of the established companionship within the Choir, which has developed over several years. This role requires a musical leader who can strike a careful balance between fostering the special and unique community created with existing choir members and working with the team to increase attendance and welcome new singers to the group.
We are searching for a Choir Leader who would relish the opportunity to take ownership of this initiative, bringing creativity, passion, commitment and organisation to the next chapter for St George's Hospitals Staff Choir.
Job Requirements
SKILLS WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We would love to meet people who have:
At least 2 years' experience as a music facilitator.
Experience of song-writing and performing.
Strong musical, vocal, and leadership skills.
Ability to teach singers with different abilities and confidence levels.
Creative, engaging, and innovative working style.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
Commitment to equal opportunities, diversity, and professional reflection.
Access to your own laptop and recording equipment.
Shortlisted candidates should also be:
Reliable, flexible, and able to work independently.
Empathetic, professional, and able to maintain boundaries and confidentiality.
Desirable:
Experience leading choirs or working in community, workplace, or healthcare settings.
Piano or accompaniment skills.
Experience performing in non-traditional settings.
Job Responsibilities
DESCRIPTION OF WORK INVOLVED
Creative facilitation:
Plan and lead weekly choir sessions in a welcoming, inclusive environment that supports staff wellbeing and participation.
Work with the Choir and Arts Engagement Manager to select accessible repertoire for mixed-ability singers.
Teach vocal technique, harmony, and performance skills, and facilitate collaborative song-writing to help build confidence and enjoyment.
Practical tasks:
Prepare the choir for performances at hospital, charity, community, and other events.
Work with the Arts Team to schedule rehearsals and performances, provide musical leadership, and accompaniment where applicable.
Other duties: Complete session reports, including attendance and summaries, and attend termly reflection and evaluation sessions.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an online interview on Tuesday 8 September 2026.
Candidates successful at interview will then be invited to deliver a short 15-minute taster session on Thursday 10 September 2026 between 5 and 7 pm. During this session, candidates will have the opportunity to demonstrate their choir-leading and facilitation skills with Choir Members in person at St George’s Hospital, Tooting.
Delivery of the short taster session will be paid at £70 (including VAT) to cover preparation and delivery.
