Looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity that combines creativity, wellbeing and community impact?

Theatre Troupe is an arts organisation supporting children aged 7-12 who have experienced adversity or mental distress. Through theatre and one-to-one mentoring, we help young people build confidence, build meaningful connections, and create brighter futures.

We're recruiting Volunteer Mentors and Chorus Members for our 2026-27 projects in Southwark and Tower Hamlets.

Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds, including drama, psychology, education, social work, youth work, and many other fields. Whether you're a student, a professional, or simply passionate about using creativity for social good, we'd love to hear from you.

Commitment:
Weekly after-school sessions during term time
Minimum commitment of two school terms

Project Dates:
Southwark: Mondays, 28 September - 7 December 2026
Tower Hamlets: Wednesdays, 14 October - 9 December 2026 (Please note you would be needed on Tuesday 13th October too)

Locations:
Southwark Playhouse Elephant and Queen Mary University of London, Mile End

No theatre experience is necessary - we're looking for people with empathy, reliability and a genuine commitment to supporting young people.

Job Requirements

- Empathy and Emotional Resilience: The ability to remain calm, supportive, and grounded when working with young people experiencing high levels of distress.

- Enhanced DBS Check: Given the nature of the work with minors and vulnerable adults, a clean, enhanced criminal record check is mandatory. We can process an application on your behalf if you don't already have one.

- Reliability and Commitment: These young people often face instability; showing up consistently is crucial for building the necessary trust.

- Active Listening Skills: The capacity to hear what a young person is saying (and not saying) without judgment.

- Playfulness and Creativity: You don't need to be a professional actor, but you do need a "game" attitude and a willingness to engage in imaginative play.

- Boundaries: An understanding of professional safeguarding bound

Job Responsibilities

- 1-to-1 Mentoring: Providing focused attention to a specific young person during group sessions to help them engage with the activities at their own pace.

- Supporting Workshop Facilitation: Assisting the Lead Artist and Therapeutic Lead in running drama games, exercises, and rehearsals.

- Safeguarding Vigilance: Monitoring the wellbeing of participants and immediately reporting any concerns to the designated safeguarding lead.

- Post-Session De-briefing: Participating in team meetings after workshops to discuss participant progress and manage your own emotional impact.

- Practical Setup: Helping with the "nuts and bolts"-setting up the room, preparing props, or making sure there's a quiet space available if a participant needs a break.
