Job Summary
Job Description
Bromley House Library, a registered charity, occupies a unique niche in Nottingham's cultural and literary landscape and has been operating from this site since 1821. We have a dual charitable mission - to enrich the lives of our users and to preserve the physical fabric of Bromley House, a historic Grade II* listed building in the centre of the city.
We have a skilled team of staff, trustees and volunteers to help us achieve our aims and we now seek new trustees to join our Board. Trustees have a key role in shaping the future direction of the Library, at a time of challenge and opportunity. If you have time to give, love literature and heritage, and want to work with others to support this unique and much-loved library in the heart of Nottingham, this is a wonderful opportunity for you to have a positive and meaningful impact.
Our main requirements for the role are a commitment to the values, aims and vision of the library, the ability to think clearly and strategically, and the time available to attend meetings. However, we would be especially interested to hear from you if you have a background in library or collections management, fundraising, capital project management, digital communications and/or have strong networks with other organisations in the heritage, cultural, arts and literature sectors.
Job Requirements
We are looking for trustees who can demonstrate:
A commitment to the values, aims and vision of the Library
Effective communication skills
The ability to think clearly and strategically
Applications would be particularly welcomed from:
Regular users of the library, who can bring an understanding of the needs and perspectives of our members
People who can bring different experiences and backgrounds to the Board to help us become more reflective of the diversity within our communities.
People with experience in library or collections management, fundraising, digital comms and marketing, capital project management, and/or with strong networks with other
organisations in the heritage, cultural, arts and literature sectors.
Previous experience of being a trustee would be useful but is not essential, as training and support will be provided to successful applicants.
Job Responsibilities
Trustees are responsible for setting the long-term vision and strategy for the library, approving plans and budgets and monitoring performance against them. The Board is responsible for the financial health of the charity, ensuring the Library complies with any necessary regulations and for overseeing the work of the library to ensure that its charitable status is maintained.
Day-to-day operations are delegated to the Library Director, who leads a team of 12 staff (6 FTE).
The Board works through meetings, sub-groups (eg. HR, fundraising, building and EDI) and through ad hoc meetings when necessary. The full Board meets at least quarterly, in addition to the AGM and any subgroups , and usually holds an annual Awayday to discuss key strategic issues. Quarterly meetings are in person, others can be virtual or hybrid.
Trustees are usually appointed initially for three years and
may be reappointed, to serve up to a maximum of 9 years
