Job Summary

Wigan Council is seeking to appoint a Digital Artist to produce a new digital work to introduce Wigan’s identity as part of Wigan Museum’s main gallery development. The commission to be an immersive and imaginative digital art work, a central focus of our reimagined long-term museum exhibition.

Job Description

Digital Art commission fee; £10,000 (+VAT)

Wigan Museum's new main gallery exhibition in 2027 will have a new design approach that is centred on the borough's unique identity - what we are calling Our Northern Soul - and we will co-develop distinct personality trait themes that showcase what it is to be Wiganese with community partners.

These personality traits will allow us to bring collection objects, stories together in different and surprising ways with a new digital art work to celebrate the borough's heritage and showcase the everyday and the extraordinary;
Traits; Rebellious, Innovate, Dreamer, Caring, Curious, Legendary, Passionate, Surprising.

This commission will be specifically focused on using the collection and be informed by ongoing engagement workshops from our wider programme to tell a narrative about; collective representation of the diverse communities, stories and heritage of the borough.

The commission will be part of a complete redesign of the main gallery, so you will be required to work collaboratively with the Exhibition Designers to accommodate the proposed artwork requirements and positioning. The art work will be accessioned into the museum's collection.

Job Requirements

The Artist will:
Work collaboratively with Wigan Museum staff and the Exhibition Designer to help inform the concept and delivery of the commission.
Resources; You will ensure the art work is informed by emerging theme/s identified via our wider community engagement. You will also be able to visit our museum collection store of 30,000 objects to drive inspiration for the art work.
The digital art work proposed shall be an immersive piece that is a genuine reflection of Wigan.
Proposal; to the Project Manager for approval an artwork concept, rationale, and realisation budget for agreement. The art work exhibition audio-visual needs may in part be an allocation of the Exhibition Designer budget, however this must be able to be affordable and agreed in advance with the Exhibition Designers.

Job Responsibilities

The commission will be part of a complete redesign of the main gallery, so you will be required to work collaboratively with the Exhibition Designers to accommodate the proposed artwork requirements and positioning. The art work will be accessioned into the museum's collection.

The final art work the proposed art work should be produced to the highest standard. The new digital art work should align with wider exhibition curation and redesign of the museum space.
Ensure you work collaboratively with the Exhibition Designer and Wigan Museum staff on the installation of the artwork in the new exhibition displays.
You will oversee installation of the digital art work and ensure it is fully commissioned and robust for daily exhibition as a permanent long-term exhibit.
The Artist will be expected to work with our evaluation on the capture of project evaluation, engagement, impact and feedback.
