Job Description

The National Gallery houses the national collection of paintings in the Western European tradition, spanning the 13th to the 19th centuries. The Gallery's mission is to ensure people can engage with great art, offering its collection on show 361 days a year, free of charge.

They are seeking a Gallery Manager to support the Senior Gallery Manager and Head of Operations by managing day-to-day onsite activities. As a floor-based manager, you will play a key role in upholding standards and ensuring a high-quality experience for millions of visitors each year. You will act as the most senior Gallery representative onsite when required, collaborating closely with colleagues across departments to ensure the visitor journey is safe, engaging, and uniformly excellent.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about delivering a great experience for all our staff and visitors, a confident communicator, well-versed in stakeholder management, attentive, service-focused, and demonstrate strong organisational and administrative skills.

The Gallery Manager is a pivotal, floor-based role responsible for ensuring the Gallery's daily operations run smoothly. You will ensure the Gallery is fit for purpose before opening and manage operational hours through effective safety, capacity, cleaning, and queue management.

Job Requirements

Key Skills:

Operational Experience- experience coordinating operational teams within a visitor attraction or visitor-focused environment.

Health and Safety - understanding of visitor health and safety, including identifying hazards and taking appropriate action.

Incident Management - experience in incident management and Business Continuity Planning (BCP) processes.

Communication - Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to quickly build positive relationships with diverse stakeholders.

Sound Judgement - ability to respond to incidents quickly and efficiently using reliable judgement.

Technical Knowledge - Working knowledge of fire and security systems and procedures

Key Attributes:

Proactive - A self-starter who actively seeks out improvements to existing processes.

Influencer & Negotiator - Able to provide advice and negotiate effectively with internal departments and third-party contractors.

Detail-Oriented - High level of attention to detail

Job Responsibilities

Operational Management - Providing daily onsite management of activities, including oversight of VIP visits and special events.

Incident Response - Acting as the primary point of contact for incidents and emergency evacuations and investigating health and safety-related issues.

Exhibition Planning - Advising on and executing crowd control, capacity, and queue management for exhibitions.

Stakeholder Collaboration - Consulting regularly with internal teams-including Hosts, Security, Catering, and Buildings-and external stakeholders like emergency services and TFL.

Service Improvement - Identifying areas for improvement and delivering best-practice training to teams across the Gallery and third-party contractors.

Complaints Resolution - Serving as the final point of escalation for visitor complaints and operational concerns.

Working Pattern:
This role requires regular weekend and evening work on a rota basis.
