Job Description
The Building Manager plays a central role in ensuring Grand Junction is safe, welcoming, well maintained and fully operational for its programme of community, cultural and commercial activity. Based within a Grade I listed church and modern extension, the postholder is responsible for day-to-day management, maintenance, cleanliness and presentation of the building, ensuring it is ready to support classes, concerts, tours, private hires, community events and public activities.
The Building Manager oversees building operations, maintenance and supplier contracts, liaises with contractors, and ensures repairs, routine checks and statutory requirements are completed to a high standard and within budget. The role includes responsibility for health and safety, fire safety, site security, emergency procedures, equipment testing, cleaning standards and internal and external spaces.
The postholder will line-manage the Facilities Assistant and casual facilities staff, ensuring effective supervision, training and rota cover. They will work closely with the Venue Sales and Events Manager, caf staff, volunteers, contractors and the wider Grand Junction team to coordinate room set-ups, event preparation, opening and closing, bar and stage arrangements, and smooth delivery. The role also involves acting as event manager or deputy manager for selected events and hires, supporting safe visitor entry and exit, overseeing issues and helping provide a positive experience for audiences, hirers and community participants.
The Building Manager will support budget monitoring, purchasing, invoicing and supplier relationships. The role requires strong organisational skills, practical maintenance ability, confidence using digital and AV equipment, good communication skills, sound judgement and a proactive, hands-on approach. Evening and weekend working will be required.
Job Requirements
The successful candidate will have at least two years' experience in a similar building, facilities or venue management role, including managing suppliers, contractors, building repairs, maintenance services, cleaning contracts and budgets. They will have practical maintenance and DIY ability, with the confidence to carry out routine tasks, minor repairs and occasional grounds work in support of a Grade I listed building. Strong organisational and time-management skills are essential, alongside the ability to prioritise, work under pressure and meet deadlines within a busy and varied programme. The role requires reasonable technical ability to support sound, AV, lighting and digital equipment for events and classes, as well as competent IT skills. Candidates should have a strong understanding of health and safety, fire safety, site security and emergency procedures.
