Job Summary

Gaada is seeking an experienced Print Workshop Manager to oversee our artist-led workshop in Shetland. The role supports key print processes, develops public workshops and open-access sessions, assists members and helps grow earned income.

Job Description

Gaada is seeking an experienced Print Workshop Manager to lead the day-to-day operation and development of our artist-led print workshop at the Toogs Artist Workshop in Shetland.

The post-holder will join a functioning workshop with established systems for maintenance, booking, public workshops and open-access sessions. They will manage and develop this existing provision, ensuring the workshop remains safe, organised, welcoming, accessible and financially sustainable.

Key responsibilities include:

Coordinating the daily operation, maintenance and use of the workshop
Maintaining equipment, materials, stock and appropriate health and safety procedures
Delivering and developing public workshops, inductions and open-access sessions
Supporting members, visiting artists and workshop users to work safely and independently
Improving access to the workshop and responding to different support needs
Developing opportunities to increase earned income through workshops, open access and related activity
Contributing to the interim development of workshop facilities, equipment and working processes
Providing practical input to Gaada's directors as they plan the longer-term capital redevelopment of the facilities
Monitoring participation, workshop use and income, and contributing to evaluation and reporting

The role requires strong practical knowledge of screenprinting, letterpress and Risograph printing. Experience of relief printing and laser engraving is also desirable. Etching will be supported separately and is not a core responsibility of this post.

We are looking for a confident and collaborative printmaker who enjoys supporting others, can balance technical and organisational responsibilities, and wants to help an established community workshop develop its reach, accessibility and income.

Job Requirements

Applicants should have professional experience as a printmaker, with strong practical skills in screenprinting, letterpress and Risograph. They should have experience managing or supporting a print studio or shared workshop, including maintaining equipment, ordering materials, managing stock and applying safe working practices.

The role requires experience delivering workshops, inductions or technical support for people with varied experience. Applicants should be organised, approachable and able to balance practical, administrative and income-generating responsibilities. They must work independently while collaborating with colleagues and workshop users, and demonstrate a commitment to access, inclusion and supportive learning.

Experience of relief printing, laser engraving, open-access provision, community arts, risk assessment, facilities development or rural arts practice is desirable. A degree is not essential where equivalent professional experience can be demonstrated.

Job Responsibilities

The Print Workshop Manager will oversee Gaada's established workshop, ensuring it is safe, organised, welcoming and accessible. They will coordinate its use, maintain equipment, manage materials and stock, and keep appropriate health and safety, maintenance and usage records.

They will deliver and develop Gaada's existing public workshops, inductions and open-access sessions, supporting members, visiting artists and other users to work safely and independently. The post-holder will promote inclusive access and respond to different support needs.

The manager will help increase earned income by developing viable workshops and open-access opportunities, monitoring participation and income, and identifying areas for growth. They will contribute to improvements in facilities, equipment and processes, and advise the directors during longer-term capital redevelopment planning. They will collaborate with colleagues on programming, evaluation and reporting.
