Job Summary

As Ipswich Museums undergoes a major redevelopment, we'd like to commission an emerging artist with experience of Ipswich's diverse communities to visualise and highlight the origins of the museum collections. We welcome applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnic artists.

Job Description

To create an artist installation to fit within one of the original Victorian display classes in the museum's balcony gallery. Work could be 2D or 3D, see attachment document below.
Whilst exploring serious themes, the artwork should be accessible and appeal to a range of visitors. The person appointed will need to work closely with our curators to come up with an appropriate concept and design taking selected objects into account but there is plenty of scope for the artist's own vision. Consultation with our Project Designers may also be needed.

This work will need to be undertaken and completed between November 2026 and January 2027.

Job Requirements

Requirements of the role
* good time-management skills
* to be able to communicate clearly
* to have a keen eye for detail
* to have a portfolio that demonstrates experience in art production, communication and bringing stories/characters to life.

Also desirable are:
* resident within Suffolk, or an adjacent area of Norfolk or Essex
* a knowledge of Ipswich and its communities.
* an interest in Ipswich Museum and its collections.
* some knowledge of museums and the ethical challenges they face.
