Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and inspiring Freelance Ceramics Tutor to deliver inclusive, high-quality sessions for adults with learning disabilities, mental health needs and other support requirements as part of our In-House Programme.

You will design and deliver engaging and imaginative ceramics sessions, supporting students to develop their skills, artistic practice and confidence. You will create a focused, friendly and accessible environment, adapting your teaching to individual learners while encouraging creative progression.

You will work with Project Managers to plan sessions and materials and support students to produce work for our exhibitions. The role also includes glazing and firing students' work, operating and maintaining our kiln, managing glazes, slips and clay, and helping to ensure the ceramics studio remains safe, clean and well maintained.

Rate: £120 per session (2 hours session delivery + 2 hour prep)

Working Pattern: Mondays 10am - 2pm during term-time (11 consecutive weeks).

Start Date: Monday 2nd November 2026

Contract Type: Freelance (sessional, 3 x 11 week terms per year, with potential for additional sessions in summer pending mutual availability & space)

Session Dates: 2nd, 9th , 16th ,23rd, 30th November 2026. Dates for 2027 TBC

The ceramics class is offered as part of our In-House Programme, running term-time across three 11-week terms a year. The class runs on Monday mornings (11am - 1pm) for up to 10 adult students, some supported by carers. Sessions are designed to be ambitious and responsive, offering students the space to grow as artists while receiving focused tuition and support. We're looking for a tutor who can hold both rigour and flexibility: someone experienced ceramics alongside the skill to adapt teaching needs.

Job Requirements

- Demonstrable experience as a ceramist, with a strong portfolio and practices.
- Experience teaching or facilitating ceramic sessions at an advanced or post-beginner level, ideally with disabled or neurodivergent adults and young people.
- The ability to plan and deliver accessible sessions that are both technically rigorous and creatively open, responsive to individual learners within a group setting.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to give constructive, meaningful feedback and support a wide range of learners.
- A positive, collaborative attitude and commitment to inclusive practice.
- Strong experience of using glazes and a kiln
- Up-to-date enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one).

Desirable
- Qualification in fine art, education, community arts or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Experience supporting participants to develop a sustained body of work or personal artistic practice.
- Experience co-designing projects

Job Responsibilities

- Design and deliver engaging, inclusive and imaginative ceramics sessions for a small group of up to eight disabled adults, working at an advanced level.
- Plan accessible sessions that challenge and inspire participants, supporting their creative development, artistic practice and personal progression.
- Create a focused, friendly and accessible environment where every student feels valued, stretched and able to do their best work.
- Collaborate with Project Managers to plan term schedules, lessons, and materials lists.
- Support students to create artwork for Community Focus' annual exhibitions.
- Reclaim clay, glazing students' artwork, loading and firing all student pieces in our kiln.
- Upkeep and maintain the ceramic's studio as part of session preparation, ensuring materials, equipment and the kiln are clean and managed to support safe and effective programme delivery.
- Carry out risk assessments, ensuring all safeguarding and health and safety procedures are followed.
