What We Are Looking For
We are seeking an enthusiastic and organised Assistant Registrar to support the Museum's Collections Development programme. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity for someone looking to develop a career in collections management within a museum or heritage environment.
Working as part of the Registrar's team, the Assistant Registrar will play an important role in the effective management, documentation, care and accessibility of the Museum's collections. The post holder will support the delivery of the Museum's inward and outward loans programme, undertake collections auditing activities, and assist with collections management projects, including the ongoing relocation and organisation of the Museum's collection stores.
In support of the Museum's strategic objectives and Accreditation commitments, the successful candidate will help ensure collections are managed, documented and developed for public benefit while promoting wider access and engagement.
The post will be based at our London site. Travelling between the Museums' three sites will be necessary when required.
Job Requirements
Knowledge of collections management standards within a museum or heritage environment.
Knowledge of the importance and use of museum documentation within a collections management framework.
Literacy in Microsoft packages.
Clear understanding of the function of an assistant registrar in a museum or heritage organisation.
Knowledge of UKRG reports and the Government Indemnity Scheme and the processes involved in administering the scheme.
Knowledge of documentation processes within a heritage environment.
Knowledge of how to handle a wide variety of object types, suitable packing and transport methodologies.
Knowledge of hazardous materials and the processes necessary to manage them within a heritage setting.
Job Responsibilities
To contribute towards administering the legal and logistical aspects of collections management for outward and inward loans, the maintenance of the Accessions Register and coordinating regular auditing checks.
Support in the development and maintenance of Collection policies, procedures, and standards.
Ensure that full, proper, and legal documentation of all Museum transactions concerning Collection material is implemented in accordance with Museum policy and procedure.
Assist in the administration and monitoring of the documentation, handling, and transportation of objects in support of curatorial activities.
Provide advice, support and training for Museum staff and volunteers on the application of Collections Management in the Museum.
